The COVID-19 financial crisis has impacted nearly every aspect of life in the Town of Oro Valley—including the town's annual budget process.
Mary Jacobs, Oro Valley town manager, highlights that town officials had to make some budget adjustments due to the coronavirus crisis.
"While we’ve certainly had to make some adjustments, I am pleased to report that the Town of Oro Valley is strongly positioned to close out the current fiscal year on budget, and whether the projected national and state economic downturn with minimal expected impacts on services to the community," Jacobs wrote.
According to Jacobs, the town’s fiscal year will begin on July 1. That said, Jacobs reports that the Oro Valley sales tax collections have been positive amid the pandemic.
"The trajectory of sales tax collections gone as projected in February, we were expecting a 10% increase in that revenue category by fiscal year-end. Up until the pandemic, Oro Valley was having a very good year," Jacobs wrote.
Jacobs said the town officials had to issue a hiring freeze in the middle of March.
"In preparation for a COVID-related economic downturn, I instituted a hiring freeze in mid-March, affecting seven vacant positions," Jacobs wrote. "An additional two positions will become vacant before the fiscal year-end."
