Marana Parks & Recreation wins two State Awards

The Town of Marana’s Parks and Recreation Department has won two awards from the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association.

The 2022 APRA Awards Program recognizes the efforts of those throughout the state who go above and beyond to make a difference in their community.

They held their 72nd Annual Awards luncheon at the Peoria Sports Complex on Tuesday, November 8th where the Town of Marana was presented with the Outstanding Program Award- Cultural Awareness Program and Natural Resources Award.

The Parks & Recreation Department won the Outstanding Program Award- Cultural Awareness Program for the Town’s Founders’ Day 2022. The signature event is held every year in March and celebrates Marana’s agricultural and cultural heritage while commemorating its establishment dating to March 21, 1977.

The department won the Natural Resources Award for the El Rio Preserve. The 104 acre El Rio Preserve site fulfills the community’s vision to have an open water environment for wildlife, passive recreation opportunities and education programming for local school groups and organizations.

Recreation Supervisor Shelby Scheer and Parks Superintendent Dave Herman accepted the Founders’ Day award on behalf of the town and Recreation Supervisor Jason Grodman and Parks Maintenance Supervisor Steve Montano accepted the El Rio Award.

Parks and Recreation Director Jim Conroy, Deputy Director Wayne Barnett, Recreation Supervisor Bob Stinson and Town Manager Terry Rozema also attended the awards luncheon.

“We are proud of these awards for multiple reasons. Founders’ Day celebrates our community and the rich history of Marana. The El Rio Preserve showcases the exceptional restoration work that the Town has done to transform the El Rio Preserve to a beautiful Natural Resources destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Both of these are truly Town awards and highlight the culture of teamwork and support among Town of Marana departments. Marana Parks and Recreation is honored to be recognized among the “Best of the Best” iin the State of Arizona,” said Marana Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Wayne Barnett.

Congratulations to all Town of Marana employees and volunteers who worked on these award winning programs!
