Arizona universities are doing their part to try and contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect local communities.

On Sept. 24, those universities received some financial help from the state and Gov. Doug Ducey (R-Arizona), according to the Office of Gov. Doug Ducey.

Ducey announced the state is investing $14 million to support the efforts of Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University to contain the virus.

The state is also adding $8 million for testing and surveillance at all three schools. Some of the funds will be going to wastewater testing.

Another $6 million from the state will go to the development of Arizona State University’s point-of-need testing for first responders and health care workers.

“Arizona’s universities continue to lead the way in responding to the pandemic and protecting our communities,” Ducey said in a press release. “We are excited to continue working with university, public health and community leaders to expand testing and surveillance efforts and to continue identifying best practices in containing the spread of the virus.”

In all, Arizona has invested more than $31 million for the universities’ coronavirus response.

The governor was joined at the briefing by University of Arizona President Dr. Bobby Robbins, Northern Arizona President Dr. Rita Cheng, Arizona Department of Health Services Director Dr. Cara Christ, and Arizona Department of Emergency, Arizona State University President Dr. Michael Crow and Military Affairs Director Major General Michael T. McGuire.
