The Town of Oro Valley is under a hiring freeze and other cutbacks as it faces a $5.6 million smaller budget for fiscal year 2020-2021.

The new $105.4 million budget was passed in July and represents a 5.1% decrease from the previous fiscal year budget, according to a Town of Oro Valley press release.

Oro Valley Town Council Manager Mary Jacobs said in a statement that the town's bigger projects will be put on hold for now as a result of the smaller budget.

“The town’s budget this year is very conservative, and based on guidance from the council, the town will wait to move forward on large-scale projects until we have a better picture of the economic impacts of COVID-19 on town revenues," Jacobs said. “This year’s budget process was challenging due to the pandemic."

Jacobs also stated that Oro Valley was in "solid financial shape" and will still provide "quality service" to its residents despite the budget cuts.
