PIMA COUNTY JOINT TECHNICAL EDUCATION DISTRICT: Pima JTED Health Care Program wins Golden Bell Award

Award

Pima County Joint technical Education District issued the following announcement on Dec. 13

Pima JTED’s Health Care programs will receive the Arizona School Board Association’s Golden Bell award Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the association’s 62nd Annual Conference held at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix.

Pima JTED won the award for implementing innovative techniques, such as providing its 550 students who are enrolled in one of five health care pathways the opportunity to engage in a Virtual Dementia Tour and adding curriculum to teach compassionate health care.

Pima JTED’s Health Care programs, led by Health Care Program Manager Beth Francis, R.N., go beyond teaching clinical skills. Ms. Francis’ team of instructors are the first to use ingenious tools to add compassion and empathy to the curriculum in order to develop the best health care providers that industry can hire, the professionals we all want caring for us and our loved ones. The Virtual Dementia Tour®, produced by Second Wind Dreams, mimics the confusing visual, auditory, and tactile sensations of patients suffering from dementia so students can better comprehend the world their patients are experiencing and employ effective strategies that ameliorate their condition.

Pima JTED students also study narrative medicine, joining the I’m Here: Compassionate Communication in Patient Care movement that keeps the importance of human presence and compassionate communication at the forefront of medicine. JTED’s program has grown rapidly over the years to satisfy industry demand without ever sacrificing the impressive success rate of students earning state licenses, industry certifications, and entering their chosen profession.

ASBA’s website states, “For more than three decades, ASBA has put the spotlight on those districts with a proven record of achieving excellence through their educational initiatives by awarding the prestigious ASBA Golden Bell Promise Programs Award to the educators and administrators who create and implement them. This award recognizes school initiatives from throughout the state that maximize the promise in each and every student and have shown outstanding student growth and success.”
