Ajo Medicaid providers collected $286 for services under the Evaluation and Management classification in 2024, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database shows. This represented a 201.1% jump compared to 2023, when billing in this category reached $95.

Medicaid is a public health insurance initiative run by state governments and financed together by federal and state sources. It provides coverage for low-income individuals, families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities, making it a core component of the U.S. health care system.

Since Medicaid funding is generated by taxpayers, fluctuations in local billing provide insight into how public health resources are used in a community.

The Evaluation and Management grouping catalogs Medicaid services by nature of care delivered, organized through standardized HCPCS and CPT code ranges. For this dataset, each code was linked to only one service grouping through uniform prefixes and numerical brackets, allowing comparison of related services without double counting and preserving trend rankings.

While overall Medicaid payments climbed in a variety of categories, Evaluation and Management placed third in Ajo for total Medicaid disbursements during 2024.

Statewide in Arizona, Evaluation and Management similarly ranked third for total Medicaid dollars paid in 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, Ajo’s Medicaid payments for the Evaluation and Management category increased by $198, or 41%. Certain years, including 2022, recorded particularly steep annual growth.

Though Evaluation and Management payments were distributed geographically throughout Ajo, most funding went to a select number of ZIP codes. For 2024, ZIP code 85321 accounted for $286 in payments. Altogether, the leading ZIP code accounted for 100.1% of the category’s Medicaid payments in the city during the reporting period.

Within this category, payments concentrated around a small subset of specific billing codes.

Comparatively, Evaluation and Management Medicaid payments in Ajo grew 201.1% from 2023 to 2024, outpacing the citywide increase of 40.6% observed across all claim types in the same interval.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, overall federal and state Medicaid spending was estimated at about $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023, or nearly 18% of all national health outlays, a rise from around $613.5 billion in 2019, the period before the COVID-19 outbreak.

This jump marks approximately 40% growth over a few years, supported by wider enrollment and greater use of services during and after the pandemic period.

Recent federal budget laws passed during the Trump administration included large-scale proposals to scale back the federal Medicaid contribution and reconfigure elements of the program. Notably, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” passed in 2025, is projected to reduce federal Medicaid funding by more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years and introduces requirements, such as mandatory work provisions and increased cost-sharing, which may impact funding and outline for eligible beneficiaries. These actions are anticipated to place additional cost burdens on states while slowing the future federal expansion of Medicaid, even as it remains a vital benefit for millions.
